The Woman in White

About the story: " The Woman in White, a novel by Wilkie Collins, is a mystery narrated by draughtsman and artist Walter Hartwright and various other characters within the tale: most of whom are potentially questionable in what they say (as in Browning's The Ring and the Book). It was published in 1860. The story begins with Walter's late night meeting of the titular woman dressed in white who he rescues from a group of pursuers. Walter goes to work in the service of the selfish and unpleasant Mr Fairlie as a drawing instructor and in doing so meets his niece Laura who strongly resembles the mysterious woman in white. Walter falls in love with Laura, but naturally there is a hitch. Laura does love Walter but is engaged to Sir Percival Glyde. Deceit, love and various unmaskings ensue that explain the strange confinement within an asylum of Anne Catherick. Tense adventures, villainy and gloriously fitting retributions are Collins? remedies. "
My thought: " Well, I'd just finished THE WOMAN IN WHITE this morning. It is a great story of good and evil, greed and betrayal, innocence and love... This is a story about the dark secret of an Italian man in the mid 19th century, which can ruin his whole life. So he did everything to prevent it from being revealed.
THE WOMAN IN WHITE opened with a strange meeting of Walter Hartright, a drawing teacher and Anne Catherick, The woman in white. Anne was trying to escape from an asylum with Walter's help. Then Walter went on to work for a selfish, unpleasant, with nerve-disease man called Mr Fairlie. Mr Fairlie was Laura Fairlie's uncle. Laura, a young beautiful and innocent woman later fell in love with Walter, her teacher. But miss Marian Halcombe, Laura's half sister put a stop to their relationship because Laura is engaged to an Italian man, Sir Percival Glyde. This marriage was never happy for both Laura and Sir Percival, a man full of debt. The only reason for Sir Percival to marry Laura is because of her monthly income can help him pay his debt. And for Laura, it is her father's final wish. Sir Percival has an Italian friend, his closest friend, Count Fosco. Count married to Laura's aunt, Madame Fosco, also known as Countess. Count, countess and Sir Percival are all working on a "skim" to get Laura's money, either by make her sign the contract or kill her. Miss Halcombe knew about their plan so she tried everything to stop it, prevent it from harming Laura. And the adventure begins....

What is the mystery behind the WOMAN IN WHITE ? Why she was sent to an asylum ? Why she was so scared when she heard the name of Sir Percival ?
What is the secret about the past of Sir Percival ? And Why Count is helping him, not his niece ?
Those are questions in my mind when I finished part 1 of the story.

At the end, I was surprised by many secrets had been revealed. Not only Sir Percival's secret of having unmarried parents, but also the Count's secret of betraying the "Brotherhood". Not only the private life of Anne's mother, but also the past life of Laura father, which bring the identities of Laura and Anne to light. And many many more "facts" that you can never think of.... "
